Sarah has faithfully and enthusiastically served as Minister of Word and Sacrament since her ordination in 1992, striving to live into her ordination vows to serve congregations with “energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.” Prior to coming to Village Church in 2015, she served as Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette in Illinois (2002 – 2015), as Associate Pastor for Stewardship & Development at Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago (1998-2002), and at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati (1992-1996).
Sarah has joyfully embraced life in the mid-west and now New England. Her favorite times are spent nurturing family and entertaining friends. Other passions include skiing, the performing arts, and travel to explore the landscapes, cultures and customs of the world. Sarah is married to John Butter, MD. They have two middle school daughters, Elizabeth and Caroline, and a collection of other creatures living in their home.
A native of Michigan and a life-long learner, Sarah holds a BS in biochemistry from Alma College, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary ‘92 and a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University ‘98. She expects to receive her Doctor of Ministry in the spring of 2016 from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She will hold dual standing in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Church of Christ as she continues to serve God and the congregations to which she is called with “energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.”
