God calls leaders to Wellesley Village Church, sometimes with the help of teenagers. When the position of director of youth music opened up in 2006, the church’s youth knew the perfect candidate. He worked just down the street at the local high school. Kevin McDonald, known affectionately as Dr. Mac, answered the call and directs 45 singers in the Junior Choir (grades 3-6) and the Youth Choir (middle and high school) while maintaining his day job as Wellesley High School’s director of choral activities. At the high school, he leads an award-winning choral program with more than 200 singers. Seeing so many of his choristers in both their school environment and at church gives Kevin a unique insight into the daily experiences and demands on the youth.

The call to music seems to be in his blood. Kevin’s mother and grandmother, both church organists, were strong influences in his musical development. He gravitated toward music education and direction with stops in Springfield and South Hadley. He has received awards for his dedication to music education and quality of teaching, including the Springfield Chamber of Commerce Teaching Excellence Award and the Music Educators National Conference Professional Achievement Award.

Kevin earned his bachelors in music education from the University of New Hampshire and his graduate degrees from the University of Idaho and University of Hartford. Kevin has recently been selected as a semi-finalist for the 2024 Grammy Music Educator Award for the second year in a row. He is an avid sports fan. Kevin’s wife, Michaela, serves as director of Children’s Ministries.
